Continuing the Legacy of Dr. King

Each year the Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition coordinates a series of events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Coalition’s 44th annual MLK Day celebration in Cincinnati is on Monday, January 20, 2020.

Dedicated to keeping Dr. King’s legacy vibrant in Cincinnati, the MLK Coalition presents a series of events for 2020. Events will focus on his message, how others have carried on in his footsteps, and carrying his dream forward today!

We answer this question by joining our voices in song, singing for justice and inclusion. Please join us as we begin to rehearse for the 2020 MLK Jr. commemorative program, this year at the Music Hall. Rehearsals are at First United Church of Christ 5808 Glenview Ave College Hill, OH 45224. All Rehearsals from 7:00pm-8:00pm unless otherwise stated.

Originally premiered in 1969 for the dedication of Cincinnati’s Rockdale Temple, Dave Brubeck’s The Gates of Justice was a co-commission by CCM and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, with a premiere conducted by Erich Kunzel. The text is drawn from the Hebrew Bible, speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Negro Spirituals, the writings of Hillel and lyrics by the composer’s wife, Iola Brubeck.

The Martin Luther King Chorale, under the direction Steve Milloy, provides the musical heart of the MLK Day Commemorative Program at Music Hall. Women and men of all ages, races and diverse beliefs from area churches, mosques, synagogues and choral groups gather every year to musically celebrate and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Chorale, founded in 1992 by Dr. Catherine Roma and Bishop Todd O’Neal, has been singing on MLK Day since 1992. They sang at the groundbreaking and again at the dedication of the Freedom Center and often perform throughout the city around MLK Day. At the 2012 World Choir Games they won 2 Gold Diplomas and an invitation to sing in Riga, Latvia during the the 2014 World Choir Games.
